Via ferrata delle Bocchette

In the Brenta Dolomites in Trentino, a classic, areal ferrata considered one of the most beautiful in the Dolomites.

la via delle bocchetteThe Brenta Dolomites with its 42 kms are one of the wildest and extended groups of the Dolomites. It is crossed along its north-south ridges by an equipped itinerary which is exposed, called the via delle Bochette. The via delle Bocchette unwinds along the heart of the walls of the central chain of the Brenta Dolomites, even crossing some small glaciers.

The story of the Via delle Bocchette

Metal ladders are used to climb up the vertical walls, natural ledges up rock which is equipped with cables and aerial ridges to be climbed with ropes, make this itinerary a real alpine traverse.

The via dell Bocchette is one of the first equipped itineraries in the Dolomites. Invented after the Second World War by Celestino Donini, a pioneer of mountain tourism, he allowed excursionists to enter the heart of the Brenta group using a network of aerial walkways.

The via delle Bocchette specifically does not reach the peaks. And this was explicitly chosen by its inventors to not disfigure the environment. A breathtaking exposure, this walkway which is less than a metre wide cuts through vertical walls, goes round aretes, offers new perspectives at each step. If one adds Bocchette Alte to other equipped paths it is possible to walk for days on end.

The description of Via delle Bocchette

Depending on your ability and on personal choice it is possible to walk for one or five days. You will need gear for ferratas, and for Bocchette Alte (and Bocca d'Ambiez and Martinazzi) crampons are needed, especially during summer. The best period goes from the beginning of July to mid September, when most of the snow has melted and the huts are still open. Some "filtering"passages which are not equipped invite non experts to not risk. A rope is therefore indispensable to belay the many exposed and unequipped passages.

The most spectacular and classic section of Bocca degli Armi at Bocca di Brenta requires four/five hours. A "walk on the rock face" unique of its kind which leads to observe areas which have made the history of alpinism: Campanile Basso, Campanile Alto, Brenta Alta and Crozzon; meet the memory of the alpinists who made the history, allowing even non climbers to find themselves face to face with important itineraries set up during more than a century of vertical adventures.

To follow the equipped path via dell Bocchette from north to south is an experience which should not be missed. A real traverse to discover the east faces with views of the Eastern Dolomites, Molveno lake as a view and on the west side the Adamello glaciers and the Ortles-Cevedale group.

During the traverse of the via dell Bocchette we will climb the highest peak of the Brenta group, cima Tosa 3157 m along the normal route, with a short and easy climb of 2° grade to then enjoy the experience of abseiling down the normal route's chimney.

The demanding vertical height gain and the length of the route, the 3000 m of the Garbari ledge all make this route ideal only for fit excursionists.

The average day is 7/8 hour walk, and the majority is along a ferrata where concentration levels are always high.

Five days totally immersed among spires, little glaciers and rock faces sleeping overnight in welcoming Trentino mountain huts.
